When choosing a dehumidifier, it is important to know the difference between the two most common solutions: refrigeration dehumidifier and desiccant dehumidifier. Both techniques are used to reduce humidity, but they work in different ways and are suitable for different types of spaces.
In this guide, we look at the differences between the technologies, their advantages and disadvantages, and when a desiccant dehumidifier is the best choice.
A desiccant dehumidifier works by binding moisture in the air to a so-called sorbent material - often silica gel - which is then dried using heat. The moist air is then exhausted from the space via a wet gas hose, while the dry treated air is supplied to the space.
This process works very efficiently even in colder temperatures (down to -20 degrees), making sorption technology particularly useful in unheated and humid areas.
The desiccant dehumidifier is commonly used in crawl space, cold winds, garage, storage room, caravans, boats and holiday cottages.
A refrigeration dehumidifier - sometimes called a condensation dehumidifier - works by drawing in moist air and cooling it down. The moisture is then condensed into water and collected in a container or removed via a hose. The technology is based on the same principle as a refrigerator.
Cooling dehumidifiers work best in warm and humid environments, and are often used in heated cellars, bathroom, laundries and other living spaces where the temperature is above 15 °C.
Which dehumidifier to choose depends on temperature, humidity level and application. Here is a simple rule of thumb to follow:

Desiccant dehumidifiers are a superior option at moisture contents and temperatures below the white mark. Cooling dehumidifiers (condensing dehumidifiers) are a superior technology above the blue mark. Between the white and blue marks, both desiccant and refrigeration/condensation dehumidifiers can be used.
Also consider how often you want to maintain the dehumidifier. A desiccant dehumidifier with a wet gas hose requires minimal maintenance, while a refrigerated dehumidifier with a water tank may need to be emptied regularly if it does not have a hose connection.
At Acetec AB you will find energy-efficient and reliable desiccant dehumidifiers that are developed and manufactured in Älvsbyn - adapted for Swedish conditions. Our products combine high performance with long life and easy installation.
